Military historians preoccupied with combat on specific landscapes almost do environmental history, and environmentally-minded readers may deduce from conventional texts ecological aspects of warfare.

The historians seem uninterested, however, and few academic military specialists of my acquaintance have read environmental history.

The South responded by seceding from the union and founding the Confederate States of America in 1861.

The first state to secede was South Carolina, on December 20, 1860.

This was before Abraham Lincoln himself even became officially proclaimed President.
